will be shaking your head it is a brand new race. jenna: new jersey governor chris christie, making a bold prediction, how about that? the bold prediction related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can mak

, kasich, walker, chris christie, bob mcdonnell from virginia. i'm sure rick scott, they've all been there. supreme court justice antonin scalia of course, they've all been there. so their meetings these corporate chiefs and this one, today for the book came out, about a month or so ago, they raise $100 million in one weekend to defeat barack obama this year for president. think about that. if you look at the super pacs for romney and santorum and ron paul and newt gingrich, up until super tuesday they had spent a total of all the candidates of $53 million. and that one weekend they raise $100 million. they are huge to they will say and they will do anything. of course, it's a lot easier for the now since citizens united because you're not on raise unlimited corporate money but you don't have to report which corporations obtained which bills. but they also couldn't do it wi

the top of the hour, governor chris christie repeating those comments. kind of raising the stakes for mitt romney three times specifically with david gregory on meet the press alone. do you think that he is doing mitt romney the nominee any favors predicting that he needs to seize that moment and pull momentum out of wednesday's debates to continue? >> well, certainly it's in his best interest to seize the moment. but the truth is we all know that president obama has a -- is a great orator and has a benefit of having participated in presidential debates whereas mitt romney has not had that opportunity. it's incumbent on both of them to get their message out. but the key for governor romney is go out there and be respectful and be strong and make sure that the truth gets out there. he's going to get out there and show he has a choice. we have a choice between a president with a record who promotes government dependency as opposed to romney who will help upward mobility for this country. that's a choice the american people want to make and they will make an informed choice based on the facts
